The cardinal, small but mighty, does not ever blend in. How can it? With its vivid coloring, it cannot help but stand out in every season, even in the coldest winters, when everything else seems dull and lifeless.
So, what makes the cardinal so special? Well, it shows up, even in storms. It reminds us that we are not meant to hide our fire. Instead we should show up and show off our uniqueness, our ability to think original thoughts, and to learn new ways of thinking and of being. Each of us has a voice, a purpose, and a presence that matters. Our voice, purpose and presence becomes even more significant when we learn to read and write, which is the foundation of thinking new thoughts.
Literacy builds our understanding of the world. It helps us to be informed enough to speak up with compassion, grace and responsibility, to spot truth in a world full of lies, to create with unique insight, and to transform our communities. Our greatness and our self-empowerment begins with being able to analyze printed words.
Sometimes we may feel overlooked, or we may feel small and insignificant. But the cardinal too is small—and yet it never doubts its right to soar.
